I remember the day I found out about my mother’s horrific death. After completing my Sorcerer’s Training at the Tower of Fangs, I returned to my family’s small cabin near Lake Hylia. When I arrived, however, total chaos was the first to greet me. My house was completely destroyed; all that remained were the bittersweet memories of my childhood before I left for the Tower of Fangs. My mother was nowhere in sight (my father had already died when I was five, so I only had to look for my mother), but there were extraordinary bloodstains in small puddles throughout the grass. I walked toward the pile of rubble that was once my house. The Goddesses are laughing at me, I thought. All of a sudden, I heard a strange sound coming from the sky. I hadn’t noticed it before, but the land around me had grown dark, casting shadows that blanketed Lake Hylia in darkness. I looked up into the sky and noticed there was a rather large dark hole, almost as if some child had torn a piece of the sky off. I then realized that this destruction was the work of those darned Twilight demons. With Din as my witness, I vowed then and there that I would slay every last creature of the Twilight even if it killed me.

Today is the day that I leave for my travels throughout Hyrule. It will be a long journey, but my training will help me to complete my task. I had decided that I would start with the area of Lake Hylia, since I believed it to be the latest attack from the Twilight Demons. I closed my rucksack and strapped it to my belt, signifying the completion of my preparation. I walked to the land closest to the water and stared into the liquid blue. I gathered a handful of sparkling water into my cupped hands. I looked at the water and thought of how Hyrule is such a beautiful land. I slowly drank the water and sighed with satisfaction.

Since I know these waters well, I decided to jump in and swim to the Light Spirit’s cave across the way. I climbed up onto dry land and entered the sacred cave. I walked up to the raised land just above the water.
“O Great Light Spirit Lanayru...” I began. A great circle of light appeared from the center of the water and it opened up into Lanayru. “I have begun a great quest to slay all the creatures of the Twilight.” I bowed before his presence and paused. “Please guide me with your wisdom: what should I do first in my quest?” I bowed again, waiting for the spirit to reply.

“Go... to... the... Dome... It... is... a... great... school... of... learning... You... will... learn... much... about... what... you... will... need... to... do... ”
That said Lanayru disappeared into a large flash of light. Suddenly, a door appeared in the center of the water. I wondered how I could get to the door and where it led to. Without even thinking of questioning Lanayru’s wisdom, I began walking on the surface of water to the door. I noticed there was no handle on the door, but there was a picture of the Triforce in a circle in the center of the door. I touched it, and the door opened. A great flash of light burst forth, and I found myself in a room filled with many people in it. I looked for a chair and sat down. At the front of the room, a sign said “The Dome”.

My name is Mer. I am eighteen years old, and I live in a land known as Hyrule. I live with my mother in a small cottage near the famous Lake Hylia. Well...........I used to live there.............until that fateful day when I discovered my mother had been murdered. But first let me backtrack to my younger years.

I was born into a rather poor family; both my father and my mother were farmers, which is why we lived near Lake Hylia. I was an only child, but I was happy with my parents. I even made friends with some of the Zoras. When I was only five years old, news reached my mother and I that my father had been murdered by the creatures of the Twilight. My father had gone to Ordon Ranch to run an errand...........and................well, he was caught in the massive Twilight attack in the village that day. He never returned home.........My mother prayed to Farore that day for courage; I prayed to Din that day for the power to slay those damned demons.

When I was seven years old, a strange man in a black hooded cloak visited my mother and I. He wore a large amulet composed of a dragon with red eyes crouching on a sword. I asked who he was and why he was bothering my mother and I. He removed his hood and said his name was Krylancelo II. Krylancelo explained that he sensed a great deal of power within me. He told me that if I learned to use that power correctly, I could become very powerful. I instantly became interested and I took my mother into the other room. I pleaded with her and told her I wanted to slay the demons that had killed father. As my mother agreed, she began to silently cry, for she knew what was going to happen. Krylancelo told me that I must go with him to the Tower of Fangs to receive my training. That night, I prayed to Din and thanked her for the power she had given me.

My training was amazingly rigorous and exhausting. Each day, I would cast the same spell for the entire day or until I mastered it. Since I was studying Black Magic, Dark Spells became my specialty. On the last day of my training, I received a strange, golden ring with a snake on it. The snake had a large ruby red eye on it. My master told me that the Ring of Set would allow my power to grow, but I had to pay a terrible price. When I asked him what the price was, he simply said 'Find out for yourself, youngling'. I never saw him again after that day.

I decided to do research on the Ring of Set before I wore it, so I went to the Know-It-All-Brothers' House in Faron Village. There, I spent restless days and nights trying to find anything about the ring. During that time, the three brothers became so dear to me, that they decided to make me their honorary sister. That is how I got my nickname, Know-It-All-Sister. Anyways, after much research I found an ancient folklore about the ring:

The Legend of the Ring of Set
A long time ago, in the lands of the far east, there lived a powerful sorcerer. The sorcerer, who shall remain unnamed, wanted to be the most powerful sorcerer that ever lived. Being a superstitious man, he believed in the powers of Set, the god who killed Osiris. Knowing how powerful Set was, the sorcerer set off to the desert to find the key to Set’s powers. The sorcerer stumbled upon a great power kept inside a tiny ring. The golden ring was in the shape of a cobra’s head with a ruby red eye. However, when the sorcerer put the ring on, he found that the ring was cursed. The ring would not come off of his finger. By day, the sorcerer was human, but by night, he became an ancient creature. . .When the sorcerer died, the ring was left in the custody of the Tower of Fangs. There, a promising young sorceress would discover the true power of the Ring of Set. . .

I realized that this ring might be more dangerous than I thought. I decided to test the ring out, anyway. One night, I put the ring on my right middle finger. Suddenly, I began to change shape and colour. I realized what the price of the ring was..........Each night I turn into a black jackal. None of my friends can recognize me, so I am cursed to roam the nights alone. Just like the legend says, I cannot remove the ring, no matter what I do. I even tried to cut my finger off, but each time I made a wound, it healed itself. I guess Din has given me the power I've always wanted...

I was eighteen years old when I returned to my home at Lake Hylia. When I got there, my mother was nowhere to be found. The house was nearly destroyed and there was blood everywhere. I knew it had to have been those demons. My mother was killed and I had nowhere else to go...............

Today is the day I have decided to leave Lake Hylia and wander Hyrule in search of the Twilight Demons. With Din as my witness, I vow I shall hunt down every last one of those damned demons and return them to Hell where they belong. And so, my journey begins...

DISCLAIMER: I was inspired to make a fanfic in the format of a journal. This is the story of my character, Mer (a.k.a. KnowItAllSister) the Sorceress. This fanfiction will be somewhat associated with Zelda and Egyptian folklore. I do own this character because I made her myself. However, do I not own rights to the name Set, any Zelda I mention, any Orphen names/terms I use, or any Egyptian folklore I mention (except the Legend of the Ring of Set. I made that myself, too.). Lastly, there might be some foul language here and there. I striked out those parts in case there are some people who don't want to read it. Thanks for reading! (I'll be in character now unless I put a disclaimer up)
